RFU launch new On-Call insurance scheme

Working in partnership with Teleost Ltd, we have been able to secure an extremely cost effective insurance package to include accidental injury, death and illness insurance, please see the leaflet which provides more details including an option to opt out.

We have taken this step of providing this additional insurance because we have first hand experience of the difficulties which our members face when they are injured on or off duty together with any knock on effects if it impacts on their ability to continue in their primary employment.

The premium of £2.52 per month is considerably lower than would be available to members to purchase on an individual basis and will provide more benefits 24 hours a day and at a significantly lower fee than other products currently on offer elsewhere. Importantly it does not affect the FREE £20,000 Accidental Death Insurance which is already provided as an additional benefit to members.

This proposal was debated at the AGM in September in accordance with our rules and received unanimous support when put to the vote. Therefore from the 1st January 2009 this insurance will come into effect.

On-Call Insurance - FAQ's

Q

The leaflet says my family and I are covered is this correct?

A
As an RFU member you are the insured, as such you are likely to be the primary wage earner so this policy gives you the income protection to be able to support your family if the worst happens. Uniquely, we have included an element of cover for accidental death to your partner or your dependant children. Please check the leaflet and/or the policy wording to examine the benefits in detail.
Q
Does this provide cover for work as a firefighter and during my primary employment?
A
Yes. It provides 24 hour cover for you whilst you are in the UK. However, there are policy exclusions regarding certain activities and these can be found within the leaflet and policy wording. Cover does not apply to retired members.
Q
I have other insurance, why do I need this?
A
You are advised to check the cover provided including loss of earnings on any other policy, 'On-Call' has been specifically designed to provide a range of benefits which may not be available in other policies.
Q
Could I buy this elsewhere?
A
'On-Call' is designed with firefighters in mind, as such this policy is unique. It is unlikely that you could buy such wide cover for the same premium on an individual basis.
Q
Does the RFU make a profit on this policy?
A No! The RFU has seen the need to provide an effective protection policy for its members, importantly at the most cost effective premium, we take no funds from 'On-Call' in order to keep the cost to the price quoted.
Q
Does the policy provide cover if I am ill?
A The policy is designed to provide some protection for long term illness. It will provide payment after 12 months or if the fire service reduces your sick pay, whichever is the earliest.
Q
How much am I entitled to be paid?
A The policy will only pay the weekly benefit if you receive a reduction in your standard earnings (i.e. your pay before any overtime etc).
Q
How do I claim?
A Please telephone Teleost on (01263) 734847and ask for Richard Coe, who will assist you.
